Queen Liliuokalani, her people and many U.S. citizens protested the annexation of Hawaii and sought presidential refuge and help. Active treaties, presidential intervention, and international law would all be set aside. The unlawful annexation of the Hawaiian islands was the ultimate shameful act of subversion of democracy by American businessmen and Christian missionaries.
